Walter “Sparky” James Merritt, 69, of Terrytown, PA, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife of 52 years by his side on Monday morning, March 18, 2019.

Sparky was born on Feb. 17, 1950 in Sayre, the son of the late Walter Harry and Gladys (Johnson) Merritt. He spent his entire life in the Wyalusing area and attended Wyalusing Valley High School.

He loved the outdoors, fishing in his later years and work. He was a longtime employee of Wysox Sand and Gravel as a Loader Operator before retiring on Sept. 28, 2016. He was also a foreman for Terry Township for many years and owned his own bait shop, Sparky’s, that he was very proud of. His hard work and dedication was unparalleled and was his greatest gift to his kids. He taught his kids the work ethic that will continue to carry on for the rest of their lives. Sparky would instill in them to work when no one else would, to strive to do the things everyone else deemed impossible or deemed too hard, to pay attention and learn all you can about everything. He taught his kids to take pride in their work, take pride in themselves and to be proud of where they came from.

Sparky is survived by his wife of 52 years, Diane (Shoemaker) Merritt of Terrytown; his four children and their spouses, David and Lisa Merritt of Hampstead, NH, Debra and Steve Bongiorno of Dushore, Daniel and Amy Merritt of Wyalusing and Donald and Tammy Merritt of Wyalusing. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Brett Brink, Colton Brink, Brittany Merritt, Brooke Merritt, Tyler Bongiorno, Dyllan Merritt, Kadence Merritt, Alexandra Merritt, Ethan Merritt and Bristol Merritt; two greatgrandchildren,

Lillie Salsman and Raelyn Campbell; his sisters, Patty Strawser of Monroeton, Susan Brown of Laceyville, Betty Bailey of Towanda and Kelly Manning of Laceyville; his brothers, Gary Merritt of Kingston, PA, and Joseph Merritt of Wilmington, OH, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Merritt; infant brother, Ronald Merritt and infant sister, Kathleen Merritt.

Funeral services for Sparky will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, 155 Church Street, Wyalusing, with Pastor John McAndrew of the Calvary Chapel officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, March 23 from 6 p.m. until the time of the service.
