The public portion of this evening’s special meeting called by the Laceyville Borough Council lasted less than 10 minutes.

The meeting had been called in the wake of an incident last Thursday where Laceyville Police Officer Matt

Chamberlain was photographed outside Wyalusing’s Dandy Mini Mart allegedly selling an AK47 rifle that was in the trunk of Laceyville’s police cruiser.

“We’re not going to be taking any official action tonight on the police department and Officer Chamberlain,” Solicitor Chad Salsman told about a half dozen visitors gathered in the Laceyville Public Library.

“We’re going to discuss it in executive session with council members and the chief of police, but no official vote will be taken,” Salsman said.

Asked if he knew when action might be taken, Salsman replied, “no, not yet. We have to discuss this more.”

In answer to a question regarding if Chamberlain remained suspended, Salsman said, “yes, as of tonight.”

David Jones of Wyalusing and his wife Nancy were visitors at the meeting. David Jones complimented Laceyville Borough for providing police coverage in Wyalusing. “I want to publically thank you for the cooperation between Laceyville and Wyalusing in terms of police presence,” Mr. Jones said. “We appreciate everything you’ve done and continue to do.”

Mayor Phil Brewer and Police Committee Chairman Ken Patton thanked Jones for his comments.

Council President Linda Sabatelle said the executive session would also be used to discuss an application received from Diane Wilmarth, who was at the meeting, for the borough secretary’s position.
